April was a great month to be a motivational speaker. In addition to a number of programs at schools and conferences, the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) hired me to be part of the Galapagos Family Experience. After speaking to the Ecuador YPO chapter in the capital city of Quito, I was flown to a ship to give the opening keynote and evening workshops for adults and teens during a private five-day exploration of the Galapagos Islands.

Each morning and afternoon we hiked and snorkeled and came into close contact with the many unique animal species. I actually swam with a shark, a penguin and countless sea lions and sea turtles. We also happen to be there for the eruption of the La Cumbre Volcano on Fernandina Island. It was one of the most violent and beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

Keeping with the theme of the trip – “Celebrating Life” – my opening keynote was called “Loving Life Like a Blue-Footed Booby.” I discussed the following four critical factors for celebrating life:

The Ability to be Present. That means shutting off the cell phone and email and resisting thoughts that pull you away from where you are and whom you’re with.

Know Your Strengths. Be aware of how good you are, and how much you can accomplish (and overcome). As I say in my book and many of my presentations, cut loose your sandbags and you’ll fly much higher.

Laugh. Find humor in every situation. Take time to enjoy yourself.

Appreciate Your Life. Resist comparing yourself to others and judging your bad experiences. Look for opportunities to be grateful and appreciate what you have.

One of the great things about being a YPO speaker is the chance not only to visit some great places, but also to meet some really wonderful, successful people who value both family and education. This was an inspiring group and I was fortunate to share this experience with its members and their families.
