Standing Up For Student Activities

As schools slash programs to balance decreasing budgets, it’s critical that administrators prioritize with the big picture in mind. It’s tempting to get rid of arts and activities. (Parents would never stand for sports being cut.) While there may be some fat to trim in these areas, student activities are essential to one’s personal growth. They also enhance academics. When students have a more personally interesting experience at school, morale increases, which will improve classroom participation.

The Search Institute has done extensive research on student success and identified 40 development “assets” that contribute to their growth. A great number of these assets are provided by extracurricular activities.

Administrators have it tough, but they must not take away activities. Whether they look for sponsors, fundraise or simply beg the community for support, it’s critical that they stand up for this important, meaningful part of going to school.
