Three Tips for Parents Helping Teens Who Want a Part-Time Job

As a youth motivational speaker, I’ve done countless programs for both teens and parents and have observed the habits and expectations teens now have of the world. When they express interest in getting a job, parents should encourage them. Here are three thoughts to consider:

1. Make sure the experience is not just about money
. This may be your teen?’s first exposure to the real working world. It?’s a fantastic opportunity to teach them about interviewing skills and appropriate workplace behavior. Encourage them to study their boss’? management skills. This should be as educational as it is financial.

2. Let them do the work. Don’?t deprive them of the satisfaction that comes from getting, doing and surviving the job on their own. They should find the opportunity, set up the interview and deal with any problems themselves. Offer guidance, but don’?t intervene.

3. Suggest they find something difficult and menial. It will not be pleasant, but it will build character, break down any sense of entitlement and increase their sense of gratitude. The long term benefits of these lessons are priceless.
